Bamboo as a Sustainable Building Material—Culm Characteristics and Properties

نویسندگان

چکیده

Bamboo culm is a renewable and lightweight material with high strength, particularly tensile strength. It well accepted that bamboo culms have played significant role in architecture because of their sustainable contribution. The characteristics properties three-year-old from five species (Dendrocalamus asper, Dendrocalamus sericeus, membranaceus, Thyrsostachys oliveri, Phyllostachys makinoi) were investigated. results show each has different along length. Culm size, the outer diameter wall thickness, affects ultimate load. These confirm bigger thicker could receive more D. asper received highest load, while T. oliveri lowest However, when calculating test for stress (load per cross-section area), P. Makinoi showed excellent mechanical properties, worst properties. This research promotes bamboo’s appropriate use building applications as architecture.

Building a shared world as a definition of sustainable architecture

Whilst the current debates on sustainable architecture is dominated by a conversation about energy performance and abstract certification—each easily manipulated to serve commercial gain—I argue that a philosophical reconsideration of relationality is key to a sustainable built environment, examining sustainable architecture through the perspective of Luce Irigaray’s philosophy of being-two. De...

Tensile and Flexural Analysis of a Hybrid Bamboo/Jute Fiber-reinforced Composite with Polyester Matrix as a Sustainable Green Material for Wind Turbine Blades

Recently, there has been a fast growth in research and investigation in the natural fibre composite due to the advantages of these materials, such us low environmental impact, low cost and good mechanical properties compared to synthetic fibre composites. Much effort has gone into increasing the mechanical performance and applications of natural fibes. This paper examines the mechanical propert...

Viscoelastic properties of bamboo

Dynamic viscoelastic properties of bamboo were determined in torsion and bending. Damping, measured by tan δ, in dry bamboo was relatively small, about 0.01 in bending and 0.02 to 0.03 in torsion, with little dependence on frequency in the audio range. In wet bamboo, damping was somewhat greater: 0.012 to 0.015 in bending and 0.03 to 0.04 in torsion. The anisotropy in damping implies a purely c...

Estimating the durability of building stones against Salt crystallization: considering the physical properties and strength characteristics

Salt crystallization is one of the most important weathering agents and may limit the durability of building stones. Salt crystallization induces stresses inside the pores of stones. Consequently, stone durability is closely related to its physical properties and strength. The purpose of this study was to propose a statistical model for estimating stone durability against salt crystallization c...
